Blaxland is a large suburb and town located 65 kilometres west of Sydney`s central business district and 38 kilometres east of Katoomba, in the Blue Mountains Region. Sitting at an altitude of 234 metres, the suburb is found in the foothills of the Blue Mountains and is a gateway to the region. Largely a residential township, the suburb also enjoys expansive pockets of bush land surrounding its built-up areas.
Following European settlement, the district was known as Wascoe up until 1879, when the area was renamed after Gregory Blaxland, who was part of the exploration party that discovered a route across the Blue Mountains in 1813. The Pilgrim Inn was built around 1825 and its present-day remains are heritage-listed. Wascoe railway station opened in 1867 and was renamed Blaxland Station in 1879.
Blaxland features a number of bushwalking trails and natural scenic spots. Yoogali Lookout is located in the area`s east. The township`s primary commercial strip is found on the Great Western Highway, adjacent to Blaxland Station. Wascoe Siding Miniature Railway is located on Grahame Street, not far from the Lapstone Hotel, which is found further south.
