Emu Heights is a residential suburb located 58 kilometres west of Sydney's central business district. Found on the western side of the Nepean River, the suburb sits on the Blue Mountains escarpment and lies just outside the edge of Sydney's metropolitan area. Emu Heights is located between Mount Riverview to the west and Emu Plains to the east.
The Dharug People were the original inhabitants of the land that makes up Emu Heights today. Following European settlement, George Innes, a free-settler from Bathurst, obtained a land holding in the area in 1831 and named it Emu Heights. The suburb officially adopted the name in 1976.
Emu Heights' residential streets are concentrated in the southern portion of the suburb, while the northern portion is primarily bushland. The section of the Nepean River adjacent to Emu Heights is not accessible to powerboats, so is a popular spot for fishing and canoeing. This portion of the river is also home to a large variety of native and migratory waterbirds.
