Kingswood is a large suburb located 52 kilometres west of Sydney's central business district, in the local government area of the City of Penrith. Found between Cambridge Park to the north and Orchard Hills to the south, Kingswood is largely a residential suburb, but is also home to the Nepean Hospital campus and Western Sydney University's Kingswood campus.
Following European settlement, the suburb was named after Governor Philip Gidley King, who owned a large landholding in the area in the 19th century. Formerly known as "Crossroads", the suburb adopted its present-day name in 1887. Formerly an agricultural area, the suburb's subdivision occurred around 1862. Western Sydney University was established in 1989 and today, one of its seven main campuses is based in eastern Kingswood. The Nepean Hospital, which first opened as Penrith Hospital in 1860, is today based in Kingswood.
The Nepean Hospital complex and Penrith General Cemetery are located in Kingswood's western portion. Chapman Gardens Oval lies in the centre of the suburb, near to Kingswood Station and Western Sydney University's Kingswood Campus. The University's Werrington campus is based in the suburb's east, along with TAFE NSW's Nepean Kingswood campus and the NSW State Archives.
