Orchard Hills is a large rural suburb located 49 kilometres west of Sydney's central business district, in the Greater Western Sydney region. Forming part of the City of Penrith, the suburb is notable for its largely rural character, which is defined by undulating hills and scenic vistas. Orchard Hills is best known for its orchards, grapevines and harmonious country-in-the-city atmosphere.
The suburb derives its name from its many orchards, which have been a defining feature of the area's scenic hillsides since the 19th century. Following European settlement, rural properties were established in the suburb as early as 1806. Mamre, a double-story Colonial Georgian homestead, was constructed around 1830, and still stands today, now functioning as an events venue and historical home. By the early 1900s, a village developed in the area, and in 1910, the district formally adopted its present name.
Mamre House is located in Orchard Hills' east, not far from the suburb's border with neighbouring St Clair. While the suburb features small pockets of residential streets, Orchard Hills retains a largely rural landscape and is defined best by its scenic hillsides and expansive open fields.
