Penrith is a suburb and commercial hub located 55 kilometres west of Sydney`s central business district. The suburb is found on the eastern side of the Nepean River and is the administrative centre of the local government area of the City of Penrith. The suburb serves as one of the major commercial centres in the Greater Western Sydney region. Penrith is placed between Emu Plains to the west and Kingswood to the east.
Prior to European settlement, Penrith was home to the Mulgoa tribe of the Darug people. European settlers first explored the suburb in 1789 and land grants were made in the area as early as 1804. The name Penrith was in use by 1819, though its derivation is unclear. Some believe the suburb to have been named after Penrith in Cumbria, and others reason it was named after the First Fleet ship Lady Penrhyn. The area became a municipality in 1871 and was officially gazetted as a city in 1959.
The suburb`s commercial centre and Westfield Penrith are found in the central south, surrounding Penrith train station. Penrith enjoys expanses of green space along the Nepean River, and the popular Penrith Panthers Leagues Club is found in the suburb`s southwest, adjacent to Cables Wake Park & Aqua Park.
