St Clair is a residential suburb located 44 kilometres west of Sydney's central business district, in the Greater Western Sydney region. Forming part of the local government area of the City of Penrith, St Clair is found between the rural suburb of Orchard Hills to the west and Erskine Park to the east. The area formally became a suburb in 1981.
Following European settlement, the area that makes up St Clair today was first part of the South Creek district, and later unofficially known as South St Marys. The area that forms the suburb today was best known for its camellia orchards and remained mostly rural up until the 1970s, when it was subdivided and developed. St Clair was the name of the first residential housing development in the present-day suburb. Established in 1970, its developer went bankrupt and the Land Commission of New South Wales subsequently acquired the land and created two separate suburbs in 1981 - St Clair and Erskine Park.
St Clair Shopping Centre is found in the centre of the suburb on Bennett Road. Notable green spaces in the suburb include Mark Leece Oval, Shakespeare Drive Reserve and Peter Kearns Memorial Oval, the latter of which is not far from neighbouring Orchard Hills' historical Mamre Homestead.
